Posted by healthblogger On October - 24 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

Prevent ageing by antioxidants

Antioxidant skin care products have in them chemicals that are essential for protecting the cells in your body, which function by maintaining a harmonious balance between the many forces engaged in generation of free radicals.

For all those who do not know about free radicals, these function by zapping electrons from other atoms and kill oxygen molecules. With the free radicals attacking the healthy skin cells, the cells decompose. Thus, antioxidants are essential for getting a beautiful, vibrant and young skin. Fighting free radicals is very much required to have a young looking skin.

Antioxidants Vitamin A, C and E fight free radicals and help keep the cells healthy and safe. Skin care products having these vitamins as well as antioxidant rich blueberries and Swiss chard does wonders for the skin. Antioxidant skin care products that have harmful chemicals in them must be avoided at all costs, as these chemicals may penetrate your bloodstream and get into your system.

Antioxidants straighten out the fine lines and wrinkles that you have developed on your skin with age to a great extent. With age, your skin loses elasticity and is deprived of moisture; antioxidants take care of all these problems to a considerable extent and make you look younger.

Doctor fish! What’s that?

Posted by healthblogger On October - 19 - 2009 2 COMMENTS

Fish treatment

Have you heard of doctor fish? Well, if you are a regular at spas then you might have heard about these tiny piscean creatures. The title “Doctor Fish”, has been bestowed on two species of fish, known as Garra rufa and Cyprinion macrostomus. They are also nicknamed nibble fish, kangal fish and little dermatologists. Yeah, you guessed that right, these fishes are used for treating skin.

Medical use

These fishes are used for the treatment of patients with psoriasis and eczema; they generally eat up the affected and the dead skin. This enables healthy skin to grow, making the area soft and smooth. Psoriasis patients have often been cured completely after repeated doctor fish treatments. However, this treatment is not always recommended in case of psoriasis, owing to the unpredictable nature of the disease, which is mainly influenced by endogenous factors.

Aesthetic use

Apart from psoriasis treatment, the doctor fishes are also used in spas for pedicure and manicure purposes. At the spas, people just dip their hands and feet in tubs of water having the fishes. The fishes nibble at the dead skin and leave the hands and feet soft. It is also beneficial that these fishes secrete an enzyme called diathanol, which is responsible for improving skin regeneration.

The fishes never hurt you when feeding on your dead skin; all you experience is a ticklish feeling. The “Doctor Fish” phenomenon has been made famous in Asia. Countries like China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and India (mainly Surat) have spas where doctor fish treatment is possible.
