How do the kidneys work?

Two kidneys inside the human body

One of the vital organs in your body is the kidney. The kidneys are a couple of bean shaped organs that work round the clock to keep your blood clean and chemically equilibrated. Considering the size of the kidneys (each can be held inside a fist), their work is very important in the functioning of a human body. Kidneys are one of the refined reprocessing machineries that process around 200 quarts of blood every day. The blood is then purified then about 2 quarts of water and waste products are strained out in the form of urine. From kidneys, the water flows to the bladder through tubes known as ureters. The task of the bladed is to store the urine till it is passed out through urination.
In human bodies, wastes are nothing but the normal breakdown of active tissues and food particles.

Food is the primary source of the body to get energy. It is also used in the self-healing mechanism of the body. Once the body extracts the necessary components from food, rest are being sent to the blood. It is the task of the kidneys to remove these wastes from the blood or else they get piled up over time and damage the body.

Kidney problems

We will shed some light on the problems people with kidney diseases had over the year; and also on the ray of hope they can look up to.

Thirty years back:

- More than 30% of the people who had diabetes were destined to have kidney problems.
- Dialysis had major impact on the energy level of the body. Patients used to have drained out effect after undergoing dialysis and used to develop complications like dementia, bone diseases, fatigue and cardiovascular diseases.
- Kidney replacement generally increased the life expectancy of people suffering from kidney failures; however, the body rejecting donor organ and transplantation rates were also high.
- Not many ways were there to treat cases of kidney failure and the importance of controlling blood pressure and sugar was not known.

Currently:

- Only 10% of the patients having diabetes develop kidney problems provided they follow the medication.
- Most of the side effects of dialysis have come under control, except deaths caused by cardiovascular diseases.
- Transplantation has become easier though organ donors are less. Cases of acute organ rejection have also decreased.

Future:

- Advancement in diagnosis and research will result in developing new strategies and fewer deaths due to kidney failure
- Lesser people with diabetes will develop kidney problems.
- Minimizing cardiovascular complications due to kidney problems is on the cards.
- Efforts are on to produce artificial body organs.
