How to Lose Weight

Posted by Wellness On December - 3 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

Obese lady

Every one of us wants to look good and slim and get rid of all those excess fat that bulges at our waists and hips. The problem is we all want to shed the extra kilos but do not want know how. There are certain tips to losing weight steadily.

Most obese and overweight people either overeat or sit before the television, or sit at the computer working or doing Facebook all day. So, weight is gained due to overeating and due to lack of motion mainly. Taking care of these two factors helps reduce weight.

Feed yourself the right food

Opting for crash diets is not a wise thing to do as it makes you weak and besides it is unhealthy. The key is to eat less and at short intervals; this will kill your appetite and refrain you from overeating. When you are chewing food, always chew very slowly, this will help you eat less. Do not have snacks whenever you want to instead develop a good habit of drinking water and fruit juices when you think it’s time for a snack. Abstain from food rich in fat, switch over to leafy green vegetables and fruits.

Keep moving, don’t sit for long

This goes for all who have to sit before their computers for a long time or are in the habit of watching TV for hours. Do not sit with the remote control in your hand, for surfing channels, get up and change the channels each time.

If you can, use the stairs instead of the elevator. If your office is at a walking distance from your home, you will do good to indulge in brisk walking every morning when going to work. At the office also, take some time to stretch yourself and walk around the room instead of sitting for hours before the computer. Take your dog for a walk, play with it, or dance to some foot tapping music. The idea is to move a lot and be active.

Irregular Bowel Movements – Not a Sign of Good Health

Posted by healthblogger On November - 18 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

Irregular bowel movement

Even if you are embarrassed discussing about poop, you cannot deny the fact that passing bowels or moving bowels regularly is important for healthy living. If you thought that having a single bowel movement in a day was healthy, you may be wrong; all humans are not the same and so the bowel movements also differ. For some people, normal bowel movement may be pooping thrice a day, and for others it can be thrice a week.

Constipation

Do you suffer from constipation? If you are not passing bowels regularly and the bowel movements are drier and harder than what they are usually, you are having a problem of constipation. To poop on a regular basis, it is essential that you intake lots of fibre food, such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. It is also advisable to avoid greasy food like French fries and fried chicken. Keep your system well hydrated by drinking loads of water.

When you are suffering from constipation, do not hold on and wait when you need to go to the loo. This only aggravates your constipated state. Also, remember to exercise, this will help your digestive system to keep moving.

Often a hard bowel movement in a constipated state results in a small tear in the skin around the anus, known as a fissure. Normally, this fissure will bleed a little which will be fine and cured in a few days. Blood in bowel can also be a serious issue if it is associated with symptoms like diarrhoea, nausea, weak feeling, pain and cramps.

Remember it is not safe to use laxatives, until the doctor has given you permission to use it.

Diarrhoea

When you suffer from diarrhoea, you are required to move your bowels frequently. The bowel movements in this case are watery, loose and mushy. Diarrhoea happens when there is a major shift in food habits and when you are on certain medications. Make sure you wash your hands before using them to eat food.

Diarrhoea also happens due to infection in intestines or other parts of the body. An infection in the body might trigger diarrhoea, fever, illness and may make you feel like vomiting. Diarrhoea can also happen due to mental stress. Sensitive bowels, a problem that is common and medically known as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS is associated with stomach pain.

Diarrhoea and constipation are common problems that can affect everyone. There is nothing to panic. But if the problem persists, you should see the doctor. Children also suffer from irregular bowel movements often, parents should see that the kids keep their hands clean, maintain hygiene and go to the doctor when suffering from diarrhoea or constipation.

Brain Tumours Are Fatal – Do Not Ignore

Posted by healthblogger On November - 17 - 2009 Comments Off

brain tumour

Brain tumours mean there is a lot to think about apart from worrying. It will be best if one does not panic and starts thinking of treatment. What is a brain tumour? It is the growth and development of abnormal cells in one’s brains. Do not worry, as this condition can be fatal, but there are also successful treatments possible.

Types

There are primary and secondary brain tumours medically. In the primary condition, the tumour develops in the brain, which may or may not be cancerous. The secondary condition usually develops somewhere else and spreads to the brain. Secondary brain tumours are more frequent than primary brain tumours.

Non-cancerous brain tumours grow slowly and are easily removed compared to malignant brain tumours which grow fast and damage the surrounding tissues of the brain. Destruction of brain tissues gradually leads to damage of sight, speech, motion, hearing, memory behaviour and balance capabilities.

Symptoms

The location, size and growth pattern of a brain tumour are factors responsible for the symptoms. As brain tumours invade the brain tissues, it hampers the movement, sight, speech, balance, hearing, behaviour or the memory. If one experiences the symptoms mentioned below, one needs to consult a doctor soon.

The many symptoms of brain tumour include:

• Speech difficulties
• Confused state of mind in daily activities
• Loss of sensation or movement
• Difficulty in balancing
• Seizures
• Hormonal disorders
• Behavioural changes
• Vomiting or nausea all of a sudden
• Hearing problems
• New change of headache pattern or sudden development of headache problems
• Blurred or double vision

Causes

Primary brain tumour occurs due to heredity, viruses, environmental factors and other factors. Brain tumours like oligodendrogliomas, medulloblastomas, meningiomas, astrocytomas and acoustic neuromas are common primary brain tumours.

The secondary brain tumour usually originates from breast and lung cancer, which spread to the brain.

Though nothing has been proved, certain doctors believe that certain exposure to radiation and some harmful chemicals in the rubber manufacturing, oil refining, and nuclear industries can result in brain tumours.

Brain tumours usually occur in people over 65 years of age and in children below eight years. White people and males have more chances of getting a brain tumour.

Treatment

The procedure of treatment is denoted according to the age and overall health of the patient. The type, size and location of the tumour are also vital in treatment.

Firstly, steroid medications need to be given to decrease swelling of the tumour. Surgical treatment is necessary when there is a development of fluid in the brain. For brain tumour treatment, a neurosurgeon, radiation oncologist, radiologist, neurologist and an oncologist is required.

Chemotherapy is also a good treatment for brain tumours. The patient is made to intake drugs orally or intravenously for damaging the cancer cells in the tumour. High-energy radiation is also used for destroying tumour cells in the brain.

With the treatment being successful, the patient requires to undergo check-ups on a regular basis. There may be side effects of brain tumour treatments like nausea and hair loss.

What causes fever?

Posted by Wellness On November - 15 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

Treat fever seriously

What is fever? Is it good or bad? Fever is actually good, unbelievably. Whenever our body fights an infection, overall temperature of the body rises. On an average, normal body temperature is 98.6 degree Fahrenheit. Fever is actually the symptom of an infection and not the infection itself. If we did not have the immune system then we could have died from cold, flu, measles, mumps, and many other common diseases. Most of the diseases that we have today are examples of viral and bacterial infections.

To fight off infections our body starts to produce more and more White Blood Cells (WBC). WBC, also known as leukocyte, is the guardian cell of our body that fights infectious diseases and foreign objects. These cells form a group and try to attack the infection. The faster they move, more the temperature increases. This is why doctors say not to take medicines on the first or second day of fever.

Ok, you have fever; now what is the best way to measure the temperature? The usual process of measuring the temperature is by inserting a thermometer inside the mouth. Keep it inside for two to five minutes, and then check the temperature. There are other places for obtaining the temperature also, for example rectum and armpit. However, worldwide doctors say that the best area to get the temperature is mouth.

How do the kidneys work?

Posted by Wellness On November - 13 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

Two kidneys inside the human body

One of the vital organs in your body is the kidney. The kidneys are a couple of bean shaped organs that work round the clock to keep your blood clean and chemically equilibrated. Considering the size of the kidneys (each can be held inside a fist), their work is very important in the functioning of a human body. Kidneys are one of the refined reprocessing machineries that process around 200 quarts of blood every day. The blood is then purified then about 2 quarts of water and waste products are strained out in the form of urine. From kidneys, the water flows to the bladder through tubes known as ureters. The task of the bladed is to store the urine till it is passed out through urination.
In human bodies, wastes are nothing but the normal breakdown of active tissues and food particles.

Food is the primary source of the body to get energy. It is also used in the self-healing mechanism of the body. Once the body extracts the necessary components from food, rest are being sent to the blood. It is the task of the kidneys to remove these wastes from the blood or else they get piled up over time and damage the body.
