Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is also referred to as impotency and is a sexual problem where a man is not able to either have an erection or maintain a firm erection for a longer time during intercourse. What happens in an erection?

The male organ has two vertical chambers known as corpora cavernosa and are filled with a spongy tissue; this tissue consists spaces, smooth muscles, fibrous tissues, arteries and veins. With mental or sensory stimulation or may be both, there are impulses from the brain as well as the local nerves relaxing the muscles of corpora cavernosa. This lets blood flow in and fill up the spaces in the chamber creating a pressure in the chamber also. This makes the penis expand. Erection is sustained with the trapping of the blood in the chamber.
